York-Rapidlink Viva Bus Rapid Transit

Aecon – Dufferin joint venture was chosen for the York Viva Bus Rapid Transit project which was a 261-million-dollar contract with over 10 kilometers of paving spanning along Yonge Street from Hwy 7 in Richmond Hill to Davis Drive in Newmarket.

Crupi was chosen as the exclusive Paving contractor on the complete job which had a variety of specialty mixes from Superpave 9.5, Superpave 25, Superpave 19, and Superpave 12.5FC2 Black and Superpave 12.5 FC2 Red.

The scope of the work was to pave the main roadway, bus lanes, bike lanes and driveway entrances with almost 100 percent of the work completed at night to have minimal disruption to the local communities. This work spanned over 3 years and Crupi laid over 148,000 tonnes of asphalt. Most of the work was completed with echelon paving to minimize on cold joints which gives the public a smoother surface to drive on. Bus lanes were completed with Superpave 12.5FC2 asphalt which was produced with a higher grade of asphalt cement, polymers, and red pigment. This special mix for the bus lanes was needed to withstand the heavy loading of the buses and to delineate the bus lanes from the regular traffic lanes.

It was a great team effort and 100 percent commitment from the whole Crupi team.
